    Barbara Amelia Hertzel

    August 5, 1933 - October 3, 2020

Barbara Amelia (Gutowski) Hertzel of Pineville, NC, born in Lackawanna, N.Y., left us on October 3, 2020, returning to the starry heavens. She is survived by 4 daughters, Karen Pratt (Bruce), Suzanne Hertzel-Nelson (Paul deceased), Linda Hartkopf (Douglas), Deborah Hertzel Curran (Hank Ervin), 8 grandkids and 3 great grandchildren. Barbara embraced life, loved her family, friends, community, good food, wine and an adventure. She was a faithful wife of 50+ years to the late Norman Hertzel, as well as an active community leader, involved church member, business manager and mom. The Girls Scouts of America of Westchester County, NY, honored her 25 years of dedication as a leader and educator. An environmentalist, Barbara started the Lewisboro NY recycling center and could be found working in her garden, composting, cleaning up roadside litter or leading classes for the Poundridge Basket Town Garden Club. The PTA, Katonah Women Civic Club, Lewisboro Tennis League, and Jessie Lee United Methodist Church Alter Guild and church community missed her when they moved to the Charlotte, N.C. area. She continued to be an active community member volunteering at the Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, Davidson United Methodist Church Puppet Ministry, and several other organizations. Barbara loved theater, experiencing the arts, antiquing and supported local theater productions. She was an avid reader, painter, incredible cook, loved to entertain and took an interest in whomever she spoke with. A celebration of her rich life will be held at Davidson United Methodist Church in Davidson, NC on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at 2:00 PM. Davidson United Methodist Church has COVID-19 virus precautions that requires those planning to attend the service will need to register online at https://pastorstoolbox.com/save-a-seat/9fd630e8-532e-59ca-8e6f-5f4340d33fb3 and then complete the Davidson UMC Covenant form which is a one-time questionnaire for coming onto the campus at https://dumcstudents.breezechms.com/form/3a6971. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, NY, NY or other organizations that supported her passions.
