Douglas Joseph Abell Sr.
September 12, 1950 - June 5, 2021
A 1968 graduate of Flaget High School in Louisville, Kentucky, Douglas J. Abell, Sr. was the first in his family to graduate college as a 1972 graduate of Bellarmine University. Doug had an impactful 30 year career as a registered nurse helping those facing psychological and substance abuse challenges ultimately retiring to spend time and care for his grandson. Doug, a devout Catholic, nurtured and supported both his son and his grandson through their education in Catholic elementary and Catholic high school culminating in both attending the University of Notre Dame. Doug's legacy will continue to live on through the D3 Foundation which he founded with his son and grandson to give a musical voice to children and mothers impacted by the horror of abortion and to support families who desire but cannot otherwise afford a Catholic education. Doug will be buried in a private service at Our Lady of Sorrows in the Cedar Grove Cemetery at the University of Notre Dame. The Abell family requests that expressions of sympathy be in the form of support of Christ the King Catholic High School in Huntersville, North Carolina (ctkchs.org), the Catholic Education Foundation of Louisville (ceflou.org) or the D3 Foundation (d3foundationnc.org). James Funeral Home, of Huntersville, is serving the family and obituary lovingly written by the family.
