Jean Martin
April 13, 1930 - March 30, 2022
Jean Barbara Martin, née Mahoney, 91, formerly of Kansas City & the Philadelphia area passed away peacefully at Huntersville Oaks on Wednesday, March 20th, 2022. Jean was born April 13th, 1930 in Germantown, PA to Emma Barker Mahoney & Francis J Mahoney. Youngest sibling of Frank A. & Wayne B. Mahoney, Jean spent her childhood & teenage years in the Philadelphia area, spending summers with her Aunts in Connecticut & the Jersey Shore. Jean met George R. Martin while he was in the Coast Guard and they married in 1952 in Camden, NJ. After George’s time in the military, they returned to Kansas City where she spent over 60 years as an active member of the Raytown & Kansas City communities. From leading Girl Scout Troops, Jaycees Woman’s Club, Rotary and Blue Ridge Presbyterian church committees, Jean loved serving her community & making positive contributions wherever she served. An avid Kansas City Royals & Chiefs fan, she cheered both teams on well before their recent popularity, saying you never give up on your home team. After raising her 2 daughters, Deborah & Nancy, Jean returned to work full-time in the mid-1960’s, leading the way in corporate offices & paving the road for others to follow in her footsteps. Banking, Finance & Human Resources were her specialty fields, and she could write a book on her experiences. Retirement was not in her vocabulary so she worked up until she was 76. She then turned to serving as the Financial Secretary @ BRPC, until moving to North Carolina in 2014. When her husband George passed in 1985, Jean created a new life and quickly formed a support group of other widowed friends, and they affectionally called themselves “The Golden Girls”. For the next 30+ years, the sisterhood traveled the country, even took up line dancing & visited multiple cities where her daughter Nancy would relocate to. Outside of serving her church & community, Jean loved Shopping. She would spend hours searching for the perfect suit or dress and it was a badge of honor to shop so long she would close the store. A Memorial Service for Jean will be held in Kansas City later this summer. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC. 28081, your local Hospice Chapter or BRPC, P.O. Box 16536, Raytown, MO. 64133. The family would like to thank Jean’s longtime CNA’s, Jessica Palamara, Kathy Ray and the staff & residents at Huntersville Oaks for making Mom’s time there comfortable & supportive. We are very appreciative & grateful for your support. Jean’s spirt & soul will continue to shine through and her presence will continue to be part to all who knew her.
