    Marvin Cathey

    August 12, 1925 - March 14, 2022

Marvin Hipp "Poppy" Cathey, 96, of Huntersville died March 14, 2022. He was born on August 12, 1925 in Mecklenburg County to the late Andrew and Carrie Cathey. Marvin was a hard worker from a young age. He started building houses with his dad in 1954 and took great pride in each house he built. He married the love of his life, Keeby, in 1943, and God blessed them with 71 years of marriage. Their commitment to each other has been a wonderful example to our family. Marvin loved to talk and his favorite topic was his family. He was so proud of each one and enjoyed keeping up with their lives. Until recently, he sent a card and a check for every birthday. They loved hosting family dinners at their home and he built a dining room table to seat 20 people. In 1993, he purchased a beach house for the family to enjoy vacations together. For many years, they provided all the food for everyone visiting. Prior to that, he built a vacation home at Lake Norman and one in Boone, NC. All 3 homes gave his family many memories thanks to his generosity. He had a strong faith in God and enjoyed serving in the church as a deacon, an elder, and volunteered on disaster relief trips. He will be missed but his legacy lives on through his family. Survivors include his son, Roger Cathey and wife Sylvia of Little River, SC; daughters, Donna Sadler of Denver and Candy Kidd and husband Chris of Charlotte; sister, Dot Horne of Charlotte; grandchildren - Lee Sadler and wife, Quinn; Kristi McRorie and husband, Mark; Chip Cathey and wife, Kristin; Brian Cathey and wife, Erin; Carrie Keltner and husband, Dan; Daniel Kidd and wife, Ali; Jenny Shank and husband, Lee; Katie Cathey and partner, Terry Butner; and 19 great-grandkids. He is preceded in death by wife, Keeby; sister, Thelma Taunt; brother, John Cathey; son-in-law, Ronnie Sadler. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 Sunday, March 27 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church. Visitation will follow. Memorials may be made to Smile Train https://www.smiletrain.org or Fight With Me email for donation info: [email protected] The family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Rhonda McDowell, caregiver at Shads Landing, Hospice of Lake Norman, and the staff of Autumn Care of Cornelius for their love and compassion. James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
