    Paul McMellon

    June 10, 1935 - May 26, 2020

Paul Denford McMellon, 84 of Cornelius passed away peacefully, May 26, 2020 at Olde Knox Commons. He was born on June 10, 1935 in Lincoln County, WV to the late Homer and Anna McMellon. He was a member of Mt Zion United Methodist Church in Cornelius, NC. After serving in the Army, Paul played football at West Virginia Tech University. He later received a Master's in Education from Marshall University. He started his career as a school teacher and coach. He moved his family to Charlotte, NC in 1969, to start a successful career in textbook and library book sales. After he retired, Paul made many friends at the Davidson YMCA, and volunteering with Meals on Wheels, Habitat For Humanity, and the Book Buddy program at Cornelius Elementary School. Paul left his family the legacy of loving their mother Gail, the love of his life, with all of his heart. He loved and encouraged his children and grandchildren unconditionally. He was a trusted sounding board and mentor to nephews, nieces and others. His positive outlook on life was an inspiration to many. Some of his family called him "Mac", a nickname coined by one of his early coaches. He was preceded in death by his wife Anna Gail McMellon, and grandson Christopher Stowers Flewell. Survivors include his son, Joey and wife Amber of Huntersville; daughter, Jackie Flewell and husband Don of Cornelius; siblings, Gary McMellon and wife Sharon of Cornelius and Gloria Ann Matthews and husband Bill of Alum Creek, WV; and 5 grandchildren, Evan McMellon, Austin Flewell, Aaron McMellon, Lindsay Flewell and Hannah Flewell. The family wants to thank all of the caregivers who cared for Paul at his home. Thanks to the entire staff at Olde Knox Commons, for the genuine care they provided. Thanks to Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman. And, a very special thank you to his longtime caregiver, Pauline Rocklein. Pauline you were our “Godsend”. He loved you. Memorials may be made to Our Towns Habitat for Humanity - www.ourtownshabitat.org. A memorial service will be held at 6 PM Wednesday, June 3 in the chapel of James Funeral Home with visitation at 5 PM. James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family. www.jamesfuneralhomeLKN.com
