August 26, 1948 - December 15, 2020
Susan Hauser Small of Cornelius, NC passed away peacefully at her home on December 15, 2020. She was born on August 26, 1948 in High Point, NC, the daughter of the late Willie and Harry Hauser. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ed Small, her daughter Kimber and husband Burt Arrington, and her daughter Stacy and husband Tyson Swanson. She is also survived by her loving granddaughters, Tate and Carly, and grandsons, Elliot and Nolan. Additionally, Susan is survived by her brother David Hauser and wife Nancy, her sister Anne and husband Mike Lakusta, and eight beloved nieces and nephews. After graduation from High Point Central High School in 1966, Susan attended Meredith College, graduating with a degree in math in 1970. While at Meredith, she met Ed, who was a student at nearby NC State. She married Ed in 1970 and honeymooned for three years in Hawaii, where the Coast Guard stationed Ed. In 1977, after four years in Chapel Hill where Susan studied accounting and Ed studied law, they settled in Knoxville, TN, where they lived for forty years and raised their family. They retired to Cornelius in 2018. In Knoxville, Susan started and ran her own accounting firm, Susan H. Small, CPA. She was active in civic affairs and worked on several non-profit boards. She was a member of Middlebrook Pike United Methodist Church and also worshiped at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. In retirement, she was a member of Davidson United Methodist Church, where she was active in United Methodist Women. Susan was an avid bridge player and loved to travel with family and friends. Her travels took her to each of the fifty States and to destinations in the Holy Land, Africa, China, Europe, and the Caribbean. She cherished her annual trips with girlfriends to New York City to shop and enjoy Broadway shows and to Hilton Head to rest and relax. Some of her fondest memories were of family vacations with her parents, siblings, and their children and grandchildren that included trips to Disney World, dude ranches, and the “Pink House” on Emerald Isle, NC. Because of current conditions due to the pandemic, a private family service will be held December 18 at 2:00 p.m. The service can be viewed live or later at https://www.davidsonumc.org/sermons/watch-live-each-sunday/. The family suggests memorial donations to a donor’s favorite charity or to Davidson United Methodist Church. James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
