    Victor J. Thompson

    July 14, 1959 - November 19, 2021

Victor John Thompson, “Vic”, 62, of Huntersville died November 19, 2021 at his home after a fourteen month battle with leukemia. Vic was born on July 14, 1959 to Victor Patrick Thompson and the late Magdalene Choplin Thompson, and was raised in Raleigh, NC. Vic loved Jesus, and his faith dictated every aspect of his life. He worshiped regularly at Forest Hill Church and was previously a member of Lake Norman Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Huntersville. Vic served as an AWANA club leader, played guitar for children’s choir and AWANA and sang in church choir. His booming bass voice is now praising Jesus in heaven. Vic graduated from NC State University in 1981 with a degree in civil engineering, and loved cheering for the NC State Wolfpack. After graduation, he worked as a civil engineer at the Naval Shipyard in Charleston, SC. After nine years in Charleston, a mutual friend introduced Vic to the love of his life, Mary, the week before he moved to Charlotte. The two have been happily married for more than 30 years. In 1992, Vic and Mary moved to the Greenfarm neighborhood in Huntersville, NC where they raised their two children Elizabeth and Tucker. Vic was a loving husband, father, and friend. He loved to spend time with his family playing guitar and singing, playing ball with his children in the yard, and planning spontaneous adventures. He loved hiking, exploring national parks, and traveling with his wife and children. An avid golfer, he enjoyed collecting errant golf balls, and sharing them with his friends and family. Those who played with him might argue he spent as much time in the woods hunting for golf balls as he did playing his own. Vic’s golf career peaked annually at the Hot Dog Open that he would organize with his longtime friends and coworkers at McGuire. For 30 years, Vic worked as a civil structural engineer at McGuire Nuclear Station. He was a problem solver, and loved working alongside his fellow engineers, technicians, and security team at Duke on numerous projects, including the Thompson Trestles. He loved to teach, and used his skills in engineering and math to tutor countless family, friends and neighbors in calculus, statics, and more. Vic also shared his love of basketball and volleyball with his children. He spent countless hours coaching Tucker in too many gyms to count and was always elated to cheer on his favorite team....any team that Elizabeth or Tucker were on. Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth Tucker Thompson of Huntersville; son Tucker of Wilmington, NC; daughter, Elizabeth Smith and husband Russell of Apex; sisters, Jennifer Thompson Kelvington and her husband Joe and Susan Thompson McCarthy and her husband Shane, Sr.; father, Pat Thompson; father-in-love, Hugh Tucker, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother, Magdalene Choplin Thompson and mother-in-love, Betty Shearin Tucker. The family would like to thank the many providers at Levine Cancer Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Center and The Halo House Foundation Houston, for the outstanding care they provided Vic. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Joy North Carolina. Visitation will be on Monday, November 22nd from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at James Funeral Home, Huntersville. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:00 Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Huntersville. Burial will follow at Northlake Memorial Gardens, Huntersville. The family requests that attendees wear masks and wear red and white in honor of Vic’s alma mater. James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
