Aaron McCrickard's Obituary
Aaron Othello McCrickard, age 99, of Raleigh, was born in Franklin County, Virginia on November 3, 1919 to Henry Clay and Lera Hicks McCrickard. He died on Thursday, January 3, 2019, in Cornelius, North Carolina.
He attended Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, VA, earning his degree in Business Administration in 1942. In August 1942, while in college, he enlisted in the Naval Reserve V-7 program and after receiving his degree he entered the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipman’s School at Northwestern University, and received his commission in the Naval Reserve in December 1943.
During WWII he served aboard LST682 as Supply and Commissary Officer and later as the Executive Officer, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. Aaron continued to be a member of the Retired Reserve at the time of his death. During WWII he saw action in the European and Pacific Theaters. He was at Normandy on D-day.
After WWII he was employed with the Veterans Administration, Roanoke, VA for about six years in various positions. In May 1952, he was employed by the Social Security Administration, Welch, W.VA and was transferred to Charlotte, NC. After fours years there as a Field Representative and Assistant District Manager he was transferred to Durham, NC as Assistant District Manager. He served in the Durham office until his retirement.
While in Durham, he was a member of the West Durham Business Club and the Civitan Club. Throughout his life Aaron has been faithful to his Lord, his family, and his country. He was a member of the Townsend Couples Class at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. During his time at Hayes Barton Baptist Church he served on various committees and as a Deacon.
Aaron will be missed by his family who survive him; his wife of 75 years, Garnett Slayton McCrickard; daughter, Jane M. Lambert and her husband, Brent, their four children; Austin, Blake, Connor and Barrett all of Cornelius, NC; daughter-in-law, Dawn McCrickard of New York City; brother, JB McCrickard of Virginia Beach, VA and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his son, Robert McCrickard in 2016; brothers Leonard, Willard and Chapman; and sister, Ruby McCrickard Barlow.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in Franklin Memorial Park, Rocky Mount, VA.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, January 12, 2019 at 1PM at Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh.
