Rev. Alberta "Berta" Spencer's Obituary
Rev. Alberta “Berta” Young Spencer, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born in Marion, NC, on June 5, 1949, Berta’s journey eventually led her to Davidson, a town she came to love and serve, and where she truly made her home. Her passion for helping others was a constant thread throughout her life.
Berta’s professional journey included some paths she may not have initially felt called to, yet she excelled in every role she took on. She served with distinction in various positions within Social Services in both Greensboro and Charlotte. Later in life, driven by a deep sense of purpose, she pursued additional education and entered the ministry. As an Associate Pastor, Berta served faithfully in several churches across Union County before joining the staff at Davidson United Methodist Church, where she remained until her retirement, and continued to attend. Yet, as Berta often said, "You never fully retire from being a minister." That truth was evident in the countless lives she touched and influenced throughout her lifetime. Berta was an amateur genealogist, the family historian, and an avid reader. She made a cake for nearly every family gathering and loved both jigsaw puzzles and cats.
There are two symbols that meant a lot to Berta, our family, and circle of friends. Berta had such a meaningful connection with both Ireland and Northern Ireland, and the High Cross really seem to reflect her spirit. On trips there (the latest just this past May), she always found time in the travel schedule to visit some cemeteries that were known to have ancient High Crosses. She always had a little prayer that recognized her heritage and honored those who preceded her. The relationship with the Unicorn started with so many of her wonderful medical specialists saying she was not reacting to treatment in a normal fashion. This uniqueness seemed to carry over into her daily life. The High Cross and the Unicorn seem like such fitting symbols to represent her spirit and the impact she had on everyone around her.
Berta shared a loving marriage of 55 years with her husband, Mike. Together, they enjoyed spending time travelling to their favorite vacation spots, cheering on Wake Forest sports, and being involved in the All In Guatemala nonprofit.
She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and is survived by her sons, Rick (Jennifer) Spencer and Scott (Laura) Spencer; and her beloved grandchildren, Wren, Cora, and Auggie. She is also survived by her dear sisters, Louise Byrd, Jane Bartholemew, and Margaret (Jerry) Price, and a large circle of extended family and friends.
Berta will be remembered for her warm smile, her compassionate heart, and the profound kindness she offered to everyone she met. She poured her love into her family and community, and that love will continue to ripple outward for years to come.
Friends are invited to honor Berta’s memory at a celebration of life service at Davidson United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. There will be a more social celebration immediately following in the lower level of Davidson Town Hall at 251 South Street.
