Alice Riggs' Obituary
Alice Marie Riggs, 97 of Mooresville, NC, passed away September 6, 2020 peacefully at her home. She was born in Key West, FL on May 28, 1923 to the late S.A. Mason and Alice Marie Mason.
Marie, to those who knew her, was a kind, loyal, and loving woman who could be a bit of a spitfire when the situation called for it. She was a remarkable, enterprising, and strong lady. She moved to Miami as a young child where she grew up during the Great Depression. A resourceful woman, she honed her cooking skills and learned how to make fantastic jams, jellies, and pickled vegetables. Her jalapeño jelly, strawberry jam, and NC apple butter were always landslide favorites. A lost art that she ensured was passed on to her two granddaughters in NC. Her other specialties included banana bread and made from scratch Key West key lime pie. Capitalizing on her cooking skills, she baked wedding cakes and ran her own catering business. Making her way north to Hendersonville, North Carolina in the 1970’s, she and her husband owned a stained-glass shop on Main Street. Blessed with a green-thumb, her backyard resembled a picture from the pages of Better Homes and Gardens. While she was generally quiet and reserved, those closest to her, knew that she did not back down in the face of a challenge as exemplified by her long life on this earth.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Riggs, son-in-law, Dennis Coogle, and grand-daughter Brittany Leigh Coogle.
Survivors include her daughter Sherry Coogle of Mooresville, NC; son Richard Riggs and wife Jean of Sebastian, FL; granddaughters, Jenna Coogle of Fernandina Beach, FL, and Bethany Coogle of Cornelius, NC; granddaughter Nanda Harrelson and husband Matt, and great-granddaughters, Skylar Harrelson and Danika Harrelson, both of Vero Beach, FL.
