Arlene Ruth Lewis Mattey Vong's Obituary
Mrs. Arlene Ruth Lewis (Mattey) Vong, 92, of Huntersville, North Carolina passed away Saturday, September 6, 2025.
Arlene was born in Cleveland, Ohio, grew up and attended grade school in upper New York State and high school in Cleveland, Ohio, graduating valedictorian of her senior class. She married John Mattey, a handsome Korean war sailor. When her husband was employed by IBM, they moved with their daughters, Cheryl and Karen, to Charlotte, NC. Arlene was employed as a nurse at Presbyterian Hospital Charlotte for 21 years. She divorced and started a new single life. Arlene married a kind widower, Warren Vong, in 1980 and became a loving mother to his young adult children as well. Arlene and Warren retired to Garden City, S.C., in 1987 where they spent many happy years enjoying the beach and traveling. Arlene and Warren returned to Charlotte, NC, in 2017, and Warren passed away two months later. Arlene then moved to Shad’s Landing Independent Living Center where she enjoyed playing cards, playing bingo, telling cute stories to her friends, and talking on the phone. In January of 2024 she moved to Atrium Huntersville Oaks where the staff and the Atrium Health Hospice and Palliative Care Cabarrus lovingly cared for her until her passing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Hobart and Ruth Lewis; brother, Kenneth Lewis; daughter, Karen Toman; and grandson Axel Vong.
Arlene is survived by her daughters, Cheryl M. Bustle, Sandra V. Crisp (Jimmy) and Laurie Vong; son, Richard J. Vong (Ann); grandchildren, Brandon, Megan, Jennifer, Ryan, Ivar, Leif and Katie; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 11, 2025 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at James Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donation be made to Atrium Hospice and Palliative Care Cabarrus or Samaritan`s Purse.
Arlene Vong was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. She will be missed and forever be in our hearts.
