Arline Greene's Obituary
ARLINE JANETTE ABERNETHY GREENE
(“Grammer”)
May 1, 1924 – March 20, 2012
The angels are rejoicing in heaven. God has called one of His precious angels home. Arline Janette Abernethy Greene died on March 20, 2012, at the age of 87 in her home in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Arline was born on May 1, 1924, in the town of Alexis in Gaston County, North Carolina, to Joseph “Arlie” Abernethy and Evelyn Lewis Abernethy. She attended Derita School where she played ladies’ basketball. Arline eloped and married Marshall Greene on April 20, 1940. Arline was a loving wife, mother and “Grammer” who devoted her life to her family. She was an avid seamstress, sewing dance costumes for local dance troupes, as well as clothes for her family and herself. She loved basketball and passed her love of the sport on to her children, especially her sons, and grandchildren. Arline was also an amazing cook, especially known for her yeast rolls and potato salad.
Arline was a long-time member of Green Memorial Baptist Church when she lived in the Plaza Midwood area of Charlotte, and a faithful member of Northside Baptist Church when her family moved to Derita. Nothing made her happier than to talk about her Lord and all that He has done for her. Arline loved her family, her friends, and her Jesus. She never met a stranger and radiated the love of Christ to all who met her.
Arline is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Marshall ”Buddy” and Dolores Greene; her son and daughter-in-law Ronnie and Barbara Greene; and her daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Mack Westmoreland; grandchildren Rick and Michele Greene; Kelly and Art VanWingerden; David Greene; Julie Ray; Amanda and Jeff Church; Mike and Andrea Westmoreland; and Brad Westmoreland; and fourteen great-grandchildren, Michael and Westin Greene; Eric, Grant, Paul and Sam VanWingerden; Marissa and Andrew Greene; Anna and Abby Ray; Jared, Maggie and Jenny Church; and Madalyne Westmoreland. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law Hal and June Abernethy; sister Fran Privette; sister and brother-in-law Kay and Brother Wiggins; brother and sister-in-law Tony and Gail Abernethy; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Glenda Abernethy and Pixie Bright for their wonderful loving care of Arline.
Arline was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Greene; her brother, Glenn Abernethy; and her special friend and sweetheart, Glenn Haston.
