Betsy Dorton's Obituary
Betsy Evans Dorton, 81, of Huntersville, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2013 at Levine-Dickson Hospice House. Betsy was born on May 12, 1932 and grew up in Bladenboro, NC, the daughter of the late Clyde and Fannie Evans.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Rev. Spurgeon M. Dorton; her children, David Dorton and wife Laura, Martha Mays and husband Jeff, Mark Dorton, Beth Fields and husband Michael; and grandchildren Ashley Mays, Sarah Rose Dorton, Casey Fields, Jack Dorton, and Anna Fields.
Betsy was first and foremost a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, adored and loved by her husband, children and grandchildren. She was one of ten exceptionally close siblings and was preceded in death by brothers Riley and Charles Evans. She was survived by sisters Doris Danella, Margaret Pigford and Nancy Watson, and by brothers Jasper, Johnnie, Alva, and Edgar Evans.
The model pastor’s wife, Betsy was devoted to and deeply involved in Spurgeon’s ministry and to her beloved church family of almost 54 years at the First Baptist Church of Huntersville. She sang in the choir, ministered to children in Sunday School and in the church’s daycare, and was very active in Women’s Missionary Union and a host of other church committees and activities. She will be well remembered for the pecan pies and other baked goods that she prepared and gave to friends, family, the sick and bereaved, and to various causes such as the World Hunger Bazaar. Betsy was extremely fond of children and worked for many years as a teacher’s assistant at Huntersville Elementary School.
The family is especially grateful to her many loving caregivers during her last illness and to the wonderful staff at Levine-Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville.
A memorial service will be held in Betsy’s honor at First Baptist Church of Huntersville at 11AM on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Visitation will follow in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Baptist Church of Huntersville to be used for the church’s mission programs.
