Bettie Lunsford's Obituary
Bettie Sue Helms Lunsford, 92 passed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at Atrium Health Huntersville Oaks.
Mrs. Lunsford was born in Cabarrus County, NC to Gertrude and Henry Helms on May 26, 1933. Her parents predeceased her, as well as her sister, Dorothy Ritch and brothers Donald Helms and James Helms.
Bettie married the love of her life, Leonard S. Lunsford in 1947. They were blessed to be together for 74 years. Bettie and Leonard were inseparable. They co-owned and operated Lunsford’s Grocery in uptown Charlotte.
Bettie and Leonard were lifelong Christians who instilled in their five children a deep love for God, and a commitment to living their faith. They enjoyed visiting elderly church members and friends who were infirmed.
Bettie loved birds and children, life’s most vulnerable. She carried a joyful heart with a genuine sweet spirit. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Aunt. She was a talented cook and an accomplished seamstress. Creating a lovely home and nurturing her family was her joy, one she did so beautifully.
Her husband, Leonard Lunsford preceded her in death. Mrs. Lunsford leaves her family to cherish her memory. Sons, Michael Lunsford (Sandra), Jeffrey Lunsford (Nancy), Daughters, Wanda McCord, Sharon Wiggins (Stephen), Arista Lunsford-Dunn (Christopher Dunn), Beloved Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews.
A graveside service to celebrate Mrs. Lunsford’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, 2:00pm at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, NC 28212. Visitation will be held from 12:00 - 1:00pm at James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Dr., Huntersville, NC 28078, prior to the service.
