Betty Byrd's Obituary
Betty Black Byrd, 89, of Huntersville and Myrtle Beach passed away on December 22, 2013 in Charlotte, NC, where she was a resident at Aldersgate Retirement Community.
Betty was born September 26, 1924 in Wake Forest, NC, to the late Charles Spurgeon Black and Inez Keith Black of Winston-Salem, NC.
She graduated from Wake Forest University with a BS in Math in 1945 and upon graduation married the late Charles Walter Byrd of Lillington, NC. They moved to Charlotte, NC in 1947 where they raised their family. Betty worked for 35 years at H&R Block in Charlotte where she made many life-long friends. Betty was an adventurer who enjoyed traveling the world and meeting new people. She enjoyed the arts and supported the local arts community often, including a stint as President of Children’s Theatre from 1963-1965. She also had a keen love for crafts (sewing, needle point, basket weaving, and knitting), all things purple and most of all, the beach. She would spend time whenever possible at her beach house in Windy Hill, North Myrtle Beach.
Betty is survived by her brother, Robert Black, three children, Jean Allison and husband, Al, Tom Byrd and wife, Maria and Andy Byrd and wife, Reet; six grandchildren, Adam Allison and wife, Natalie; Lauren Allison Deese and husband, Jeremy; Amanda Byrd Chambers and husband, Matt, Ashley Byrd, Dana Byrd, Aleks Byrd, and two great grandchildren, Haley and Porter Allison and longtime friends, Carl and Kay Hudson of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Graveside services will be 2:00 PM, Sunday December 29, 2013 at North Myrtle Beach Memorial Gardens with Dr. J. Kirk Lawton, Jr. officiating.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am at Aldersgate Retirement Community, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Society for the Blind, 1238 South Street, Sacramento, CA 95811.
