Betty Sandifer Newbold's Obituary
Betty Rae Sandifer Newbold age 88 of Davidson, NC died December 8th after a brief illness.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Betty will be held on Monday, December 18th, at 2:00 PM, at Davidson College Presbyterian Church .The family will receive friends following the service at the church Congregation House. The graveside service will be private at Prosperity Presbyterian Church where her parents, husband and son are buried. Betty was born February 20, 1929, at old St. Peter’s Hospital in Charlotte, the daughter of the late Joe Wyman Sandifer and Eula Rae Hunter Sandifer.
She was a child of God, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a nurse, an educator, a friend, an avid reader, an advocate of health and a keen interest in history and genealogy.
She was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church. She was active as Deacon, Youth Advisor, Sunday school teacher, Den Mother and Presbyterian Woman. She received the Honorary Life Membership pin in 2011.
Betty attended Elizabeth Elementary School in Charlotte and Wiley Elementary School in Salisbury. She graduated from Central High School in 1947, a member of the National Honor Society, French Club and Bible Club. It was her greatest joy being in Miss Janet Robinson’s Bible Class. She attended Catawba College in Salisbury, was a member of Sigma Phi, on the staff of the college paper, and a member of a winning Catawba Women’s Field Hockey Team. She graduated from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in 1951, a member and officer of Secas, the Honor Society.
She married Charles Harper Newbold, a student at Davidson College from Wilmington, NC, August 29, 1950. She worked at the Mecklenburg TB Hospital in Huntersville Harper’s senior year at Davidson. She was the scrub nurse and office nurse for an ophthalmologist and worked 10 years on the Medical-Surgical Unit at Presbyterian Hospital. She taught for over 20 years in Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated from Queens College in 1978 with B.S. Degree and from Winthrop College in 1980 with a Master’s Degree in Education and member of Phi Kappa Phi. She participated in a Carolina Health Study in 1982 in London England. She lectured on the “Nursing Process” and “Theories of Nursing” at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, England. She wrote many articles for Medical Publications, edited and submitted papers to the Assembly of Hospital School of Nursing. She was a member of PH Alumni Association, serving as president, vice-president, treasurer, homecoming chair, and attic sale chair. She was responsible for obtaining the Elizabeth College Angel and having it placed in the Alumni Courtyard. She was very proud of her association with Presbyterian Hospital and the many friends created during this service. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1988. She had been a judge for the NC Nursing Student of the year and the State Regional Hosa Congress. She has been a member of: American Nursing Association, National League Nursing, NC Alliance of Diploma Program, National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, National Gerontological Nursing Association, Mary Belle May Society, and National Association of Nursing Students.
She and her husband, Harper established a Sandifer-Newbold Scholarship for a nursing student in 1990 in memory of her parents and son, Charles Jr. Many students have benefited from the scholarship fund.
She had a keen interest in health issues. She was a member of the Parish Nurse Cabinet at Ada Jenkins for 7 years and later a member of the Health Ministry Board at Ada Jenkins which included the Free Clinic of Davidson. She worked as RN Volunteer Coordinator at the Free Clinic for 8 years.
She loved books. She was responsible for the Annual Davidson Book Club’s Tea in October. She had served as president, vice-president and secretary of the Literatae Book Club.
Betty is survived by her devoted children Anne Newbold Dixon and her husband Edwin T. Dixon, Jr., William Hunter Newbold and his wife Linda Surles Newbold, all of Charlotte. Her beloved husband of 60 years, Charles Harper Newbold preceded her in death in 2010; her son Charles, Jr. preceded her in death in 1989. Betty has two granddaughters, Katherine Harper Dixon Toms and husband David Toms of Huntersville, Charlotte Sandifer Dixon of Asheville and a great granddaughter Mable Elizabeth CatherineToms. Also surviving are her sister Jean Sandifer Boney of Graham, N.C, her brother Rev. Dr. Joe Wyman Sandifer, Jr. and wife Kathryn of Tucker, GA and many nieces and nephews.
