Beverly Cross Bradford, 86, of Huntersville, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 8, 2013 with family by her side at The Pines at Davidson where she was affectionately nicknamed "Giggles." Born in Charlotte, she was the second child of three born to the late Walter Brooks Cross, Sr. and Clara Smith Cross.
Beverly married dairy farmer and co-owner of Hiawassee Dairy Farms, Cecil Dewitt Bradford, Jr. of Huntersville in 1947. Together they shared 57 wonderful years and were blessed with four children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
After attending Kings Business School of Charlotte, Beverly became a secretary for the Quartermaster and later secretary for her husband Cecil at Bradford Brothers Incorporated. Along with being a homemaker and mother of four, Beverly went on to become co-owner and bookkeeper for the family businesses: 3B Hardware in Huntersville and Bradford Properties of Huntersville, LLLP.
Beverly was active in community and charity work. In 1958 she was selected by the Ramah Home Demonstration Club to receive its honors as Woman of the Year. Under her leadership as president of the club, she formally began the Mother's March on Polio in 1957 to collect funds in a door to door drive. She led fellow members in fund raising drives for the Heart Association, Cancer Crusade, and the Tuberculosis Christmas Seal sales. In connection with her club work, she was elected President of the Mecklenburg Farm Bureau Women. As a long time member of Ramah Presbyterian Church and woman of Faith, she taught children's Sunday school, served in the Women's Circle and was a troop leader for the Boy Scouts
In later years, Beverly and Cecil liked to spend their spare time traveling. Some of their destinations included Mexico, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Haiti and the Holy Lands of Israel. They toured the U. S. extensively in their motor home and were members of the GMC Dixielanders.
Beverly enjoyed sewing, crocheting, decorating, creating and making people smile. She was an avid doll collector and believed there was always room for one more doll.
Most of all, Beverly was a beloved devoted wife and mother that will be remembered for the joy she spread, her never failing infectious laughter and because she was always "Just fine and dandy.”
Survivors include her children, Cecil DeWitt Bradford, III and wife Cynthia of Huntersville, Beverly Bradford Woods and husband Ben of Huntersville, Smith Cross Bradford and wife Cindy of Hopewell, VA and Melanie Bradford Frear and husband Bob of North Redington Beach, Fl; one brother, Walter Brooks Cross of Davidson; Nine grandchildren, Ashley Bradford, Allison and Trevin Chow, Patrick Daly, Corey and Vilai-Wan Bradford, Cortney Bradford, Heather and Todd Hunt, Sierra and David Collins, Skylar Woods, Jett and Colt Frear; one great-grandchild, Nelson Smith Bradford. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil DeWitt Bradford, Jr., one grandson, Robert Allen "R.A." Frear, her parents and sister, Wanda Cross Gaston.
A special thanks to all the staff of The Pines at Davidson and Hospice of Lake Norman for their genuine compassion and superlative care of Mrs. Bradford and family.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Ramah Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to charity of donor's choice.
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." Psalms 23:1
