Blanche Parker's Obituary
Blanche Emily Knox Parker, 96, of The Pines at Davidson, died October 7, 2013 at the Levine and Dickson Hospice House. She was born in Davidson on August 28, 1917 to the late Adrian and Connie Dunn Knox.
Survivors include her sons, Charles Warner Parker, Jr. "Buzz" and wife Bonnie of Pinehurst and Adrian Bruce Parker and wife Laura of Charlotte; daughters, Janice Parker Gregory and husband Bob of Sanford, FL, Glenda Parker Jones of Chapel Hill, and Stella Parker Stroud and husband Tim of Davidson; sisters, Clara Knox Byrum and Connie Knox Collins, both of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles W. Parker, Sr., 1 grandchild, 1 great-grandchild, brothers Parks, Vernon and Jack Knox and sister Merle Knox Washam.
Blanche lived most of her life in Davidson and was very involved in the community. Davidson residents knew her from her church, her work in Dr. James B. Woods’s office, her 65 years in the Aplian Book Club, her volunteer time as a reading tutor at Ada Jenkins and Davidson Elementary, her PTA membership for more than 20 years, and her last 13 years as a resident of the Pines. She served as an Elder at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Her passion for literacy led to her involvement and support of the Y Readers Program at the Lake Norman YMCA. She served on both the Lowes Board of Managers and the Lake Norman Board of Managers for the YMCA. In 2008 she received the Lake Norman YMCA George Williams Award for Volunteer Excellence.
Blanche loved life. A perfect day for her would include writing poetry, solving the Sudoku puzzle, participating in a lively political discussion, receiving phone calls from family, making miniature boxes from recycled gift cards, quilting, doing jigsaw puzzles with her Pines friends, recording the Knox and Dunn family trees, and meeting someone new.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pines Resident's Fund, The Pines at Davidson, 400 Avinger Lane, Davidson NC 28036; Davidson College Presbyterian Church, PO Box 337, Davidson NC 28036; the YMCA Y Readers Program, Blair Campbell (704-716-6365), or www.ymcacharlotte.org/yreaders; or the charity of your choice.
