Bobby Eugene Sims' Obituary
Bobby Eugene Sims, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2024, in Huntersville, North Carolina. In his 87 years, he lived a life full of love, dedication, and service.
An accomplished athlete, Bobby played baseball and basketball at Mooresville High School, before attending Brevard College on a baseball scholarship. He graduated from Brevard in 1957. In his hometown of Mooresville, he met the love of his life, Sylvia (Deaton) Sims. They married on July 3, 1960, and would spend the next 62 and a half years together. They were the epitome of “till death do us part.” After graduating college, he proudly served his country as a Specialist Fourth Class (SP-4) in the United States Army. His work career was marked by over 35 years of dedication at Duke Power.
Bobby was a pillar of the community and a long-time member of Huntersville United Methodist Church, where he worshiped and served for over 45 years. His faith and commitment to his church were evident in all aspects of his life. So many of his great lifelong friends were from his church family.
An avid golfer and longtime member of Cowans Ford Country Club, he achieved the remarkable feat of having five holes-in-one during his lifetime. Bobby touched the lives of so many youths, coaching baseball, basketball, and football in the Derita and North Mecklenburg areas for over 20 years. He loved supporting his grandchildren and never missed the opportunity to attend their sporting events. He also enjoyed cheering on his favorite sports teams – the Atlanta Braves, Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, and UNC Tarheels.
His life was characterized by his love for his family, his passion for sports, and his desire to serve. In the church and throughout the community, he was known as the person who always went out of his way to help others. There were very few things he couldn’t fix or build - and he was always the first person to arrive when help was needed.
“Pa” as he was known by his family, is preceded in death by his devoted wife, Sylvia; his brother, Don; and his great-grandson, Alec. He is survived by three children, sons Jeff Sims (Cary), Rodney Sims (Christy), and daughter Libby Allison (Todd); 11 grandchildren, Austin Sims (Amy), Ashlyn Judge (Graham), Dylan Sims (Sabrina), Jordan Sims (Joyce), Hunter Sims, Carsyn Lowe (Colby), Lindsey Allison, Christian Sims, Tanner Allison, Tate Allison, and Grayson Sims; and great-grandchildren, Jasper Judge, Zoa Judge, and Creed Lowe. A special thank you to Pa’s caretakers, Ava and Emma, who took such great care of both Sylvia and him and have been such a special part of our family. A special thank you also to Dr. Flannery, who took such great care of both Pa and Nana during their final years.
A funeral service to celebrate Bobby's life will be held at Huntersville United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 20th at 11 am. It will also be live streamed on the HUMC Facebook page. A private burial will be held at Glenwood Memorial Gardens in Mooresville, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Huntersville United Methodist Church in Bobby's memory. www.huntersvilleumc.org/give
