C.W. Hager's Obituary
CW Hager, Jr., “Beagle Man” 88, of Cornelius, passed away Saturday, February 25 surrounded by his loving family. A much loved husband father, bonus dad and friend, he was born on October 5, 1928. He was the son of CW Hager, Sr. and Mary Caldwell Knox Hager. He was the last survivor of his 19 half brothers and sisters.
CW is survived by his beloved wife Martha Hager; daughters, Paulette Hager Elmore and husband Jerry and Pam Hager and wife Deanna Hager; grandchildren J. D. and Katherine Elmore and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife Janie Kaps Hager, son Mike Hager and daughter, Ruthie Wilson. He also leaves behind his loving bonus children Eddie Helms and wife Patrice, Karen Helms and husband Jim Curles, Katherine Hampton and husband Robert, Greg Helms and wife Susan, and many beloved bonus grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving include nephew Mike Knox, and the other Knox and Hager family members. Born and raised in Cornelius, CW graduated from Cornelius High School in 1948. After serving the US Army, he worked for Duke Power until retirement in 1986. CW was known to many as the “Beagle Man”, raising numerous fine beagles. He spent many treasured hours running rabbits with family and friends. Others knew him as the “tomato man”; as a talented gardener, he loved to share his garden bounty with friends and family. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching baseball, basketball, football and racing, often with his eyes closed in front of the tv. He took pride in keeping a well manicured lawn. He was a member of American Legion Post 86 in Cornelius. CW was a faithful member of the Lake Norman Church of Christ and he loved his church family.
The funeral service will be held at 2PM Tuesday, February 28 in the chapel of James Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn East in Matthews.
