Carlita Hunter's Obituary
Carlita Eleyet Hunter, born in Lebanon, Ohio, on March 14, 1928, passed away peacefully on
July 28, 2024, in Concord, North Carolina. She was 96 years old.
Carlita is survived by her loving family - daughter Marsha Hankins (Chip); son, Butch Gemin,
son Jim Hunter (Janet) and daughter Suzanne Curtis (Jerry) and her cherished grandchildren,
Anna Doering (Mike), Beth Hunter, Hunter Curtis (Brittney) and great-grandchildren Emily,
Andrew and Brett.
Carlita dedicated over 25 years to serving as a Director of Christian Education at Plaza
Presbyterian, Mallard Creek Presbyterian and Bethel Presbyterian churches. Her passion for
education and spiritual growth was evident in her work and touched the lives of many.
She was a respected leader and workshop facilitator at the Montreat Conference Center, where
she shared her wisdom and experience with others. Carlita was also an accomplished author,
having published three books on leading church programs for older adults. Her first book, "Grey
Hair and I Don’t Care," was particularly well-received and reflected her spirited and caring
nature.
In addition to her contributions as a Christian educator, Carlita was a successful businesswoman,
costume and dress designer.
Carlita enjoyed being an active member of the Lions Club, where she fostered community
service and friendship. She cherished time spent with friends and family at Sunset Beach and had
a great love for traveling with her late husband, Batte Hunter, eventually visiting all 50 states and
becoming a lover of art and folk objects from the Southwest. Carlita also founded and lead the
Plaza Players theater group at Plaza Presbyterian Church.
Carlita's legacy of faith, education, and love for her community will be remembered and
celebrated by all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.
A service to celebrate Carlita's life will be held Saturday, September 7 at 11:00 AM at Mallard
Creek Presbyterian Church. A time of visitation and fellowship will take place prior to the
service from 10:00 AM-10:45 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Mallard Creek
Presbyterian Church Backpack Blessings Fund, supporting children in need within the
