Carol Hannon's Obituary
Carol Marie Hannon, 72, of Charlotte, NC, was born on December 5, 1949 to Alma and Paul Koontz in Pittsburgh, PA and was called home on October 7, 2022. She was surrounded by love, with her two daughters by her side, as she passed peacefully.
Carol was a 1967 graduate of West Mifflin South High School and a 1969 graduate of the Community College of Allegheny County. She was raised as a member of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, later transitioning to Presbyterian as a young adult.
Carol had two careers, first as a bank teller and later in healthcare, retiring from Atrium Health in 2020, but her life's work and biggest source of joy was undoubtedly her family.
In 1971, Carol met the love of her life, Bruce, on a blind date and they were married in July of 1972.
Together, they had three children, Amy, Dana and Daniel. Carol considered herself blessed to be a stay at home mom in their early years, happily volunteering at school events, baking homemade pepperoni rolls and entertaining friends and family. She delighted in making holidays and birthdays memorable and special.
In addition to their start in Pittsburgh, they made homes in Columbia, SC, Myrtle Beach, SC and Charlotte, NC, leaving behind a trail lifelong friends with each move.
Carol was never one to crave the spotlight, but more so thrived in supporting her loved ones, always putting others before herself. She was known for cooking huge meals for social and work events and hosting neighborhood parties, once memorably cleaning and prepping over 600 pints of strawberries and making 2000 servings of strawberry shortcake for a fundraiser. Her home was ialways open and there was always room for an extra plate at the dinner table. It was a rare day that she didn't have a yard, pool or trampoline full of neighborhood children. So many of her children's friends, to this day, consider themselves a part of the family.
Carol was known as Grandma or Grandma Honey to her eight adoring grandchildren and always said "if I had known grandchildren were so much fun, I would have had them first." Whether surprising them with tickets to Cirque Du Soleil, teaching them to cook Grandma's famous cheesy eggs and blueberry muffins or spending quiet afternoons playing silly made up games like roll the coaster or hide the turkey, with her grandchildren was Carol's favorite place to be.
Carol was unflinchingly generous, kind and gentle. She had a quiet sense of humor and would sneak up on you with a one liner when you least expected it.
Carol's biggest gift was teaching those around her what true, selfless, immeasurable, relentless love looks like.
She was preceded in death by her parents Alma and Paul, her loving husband Bruce, son Daniel, grandson Noah, sisters Marti and Sandy, father-in-law Mike and mother-in-law Peggy.
She is survived by her devoted daughters and sons-in-law Amy and Mark Roper and Dana and Domingo Palos, beloved grandchildren Molly, Seth, Sophia, Chase, Landon, Carlee and Miles, nephews Paul, Eddie, Heath, Alan and David, brother-in-law Bill, sister Dorothy, many great nieces, great nephews and friends as well as her precious Bichon Frise, Elvis.
She will be missed forever.
Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 11th at James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Dr, Huntersville, NC, immediately followed by funeral services. Guests are invited to a reception, on site, after the service.
The family would like to thank the compassionate doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and healthcare professionals at Atrium Health University City for the excellent care they provided.
Donations in Carol's memory can be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
