I have spent so much of today thinking about Carol and her too-short life. Even as a young teenager, Carol cared. She cared about her family, their farm, the family's history that wove through centuries in northern Mecklenburg County. Through high school and college she worked hard and excelled at everything I knew she put her heart and mind to. She was kind and fair, strong and quick to smile. She made our lives at North Mecklenburg High School in the early days of integration a better place because she cared and because she was a peacemaker. She was a leader. She was intent on preserving and protecting the beauty of our Earth and after all she did in the world and for the betterment of the world, she came back home to her family, their land and their history. I always thought we'd grow to be ancient friends with more time to laugh about all the growing up we did together. I hope that in remembering her life well lived, Ms. Lib, Glenn, Dan and Tom will be better able to bear this sorrow.
