Carol Mayes' Obituary
Carol Amelia Young Mayes, 75, of Charlotte, moved to her heavenly home on January 22, 2016. She was born on June 21, 1940, in Chester County, SC, to the late Lawrence and Carol Roberts Young. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Jack Mayes.
Amelia is survived by her daughter Dawn Mayes and son Jonathan Mayes, both of Charlotte; brother Allen Young and wife Kathy of Knoxville, TN; sister Grace Williford and husband Dayle of Chester, SC; and sister Mary Garner and husband Dwight also of Chester, SC.
Amelia was a graduate of Chester High School and Carolina Business College. While she enjoyed periods of secretarial work with Northside Baptist Church in the 1960’s, Devonshire Baptist Church in the 1970’s, and Piedmont Business Equipment in the 1980’s, her primary career was that of a homemaker. She was a beloved mother, and her daily company will be sorely missed.
A member of Northside Baptist Church in Charlotte for 53 years, Amelia served her church family in the infant nursery for over 30 years. Despite living more than 20 years with debilitating health issues, and effectively as a shut-in for the last 15 years of her life, she maintained a positive attitude, never complaining about her pain, situation, or her struggles. She daily modeled the words of Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Her family enjoys inexpressible peace in the knowledge that she is with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that He has given her a new, pain-free, glorified body, and that we will be reunited with her again.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm, Tuesday, January 26, 2016, at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Barry Shearer officiating. A visitation will be held in the sanctuary prior to the service from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Barry Shearer Mission Ministry, c/o Northside Baptist Church, 333 Jeremiah Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28262
James Funeral Home of Huntersville is serving the family.
