Charles Lineberry's Obituary
Charles Moffitt Lineberry “Chuck”, 85, of Davidson died on January 31, 2014 after a long, courageous encounter with cancer. He now stands in the presence of God. He lived a life well and full and leaves family and friends well and truly loved.
He was born January 3, 1929 at Mercy Hospital in Charlotte, the son of the late Bessie Moffitt Lineberry and Stanhope Lineberry, former chief of police in Mecklenburg County.
He attended Charlotte Public Schools and graduated from high school as valedictorian of The Bates School in San Francisco. In 1951, he graduated from UNC Chapel Hill earning a B.S. in Business Administration.
In WWII, he served in the U.S.A.F. Band at Boling Field, Washington, D.C. and the 748th Band Fifth Air Force in the occupation of Japan. A lifelong musician, he played in marching bands, school bands, dance bands, Scottish pipe bands, church choirs and praise teams.
In 1955, Chuck began a career in the corrugated packaging industry with Old Dominion Box Co. and Weyerhaeuser Corrugated Boxes in Charlotte and Atlanta and eventually becoming owner of Box Plants in NC, SC, and Virginia.
An avid racing sailor since age 12, he has competed on Lake Wylie and Lake Norman for years and also traveled to competition from Florida to New England. He enjoyed Boy Scouts, serving as institutional representative and scoutmaster while his 2 sons were active toward achieving their Eagle Awards. He is also a private airplane pilot amassing over 5000 hours in multiengine instrument aircraft.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years (married 6/6/53), Betty Kell Lineberry of The Pines at Davidson; son Charles, Jr. “Duke” and wife Jennifer of Wilmington and son Daniel Stanhope Lineberry and wife Toni of Crestview, FL; niece Cherylynn Lineberry of Culver City, CA; and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Stanhope Lineberry, Jr. of Lake Elsinore, CA.
He served as an elder at SouthLake Presbyterian Church (PCA), where he initiated the Men’s Prayer Breakfast, The Christmas Eve Love Feast and Pageant and helped start the Easter Sunrise Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of LKN, 705 Griffith St. Suite 203, Davidson, NC 28036.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 Tuesday, February 4 in the chapel of James Funeral Home, 10520 Arahova Dr. Huntersville with Rev. Wade Malloy and Rev. Adam Mumpower officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service and at 4:00 Tuesday at The Pines at Davidson. Interment will be private.
