Charles Owens' Obituary
Charles E. Owens, Sr., age 96, of Cornelius died January 2, 2020. He was born on September 5, 1923 in McCormick County, SC to the late I.V. and Louise Owens.
He served in the US Army during WWII. Charles was very proud of his service and played a role in liberating two concentration camps. He received numerous medals including two bronze stars for his service.
Charles owned and operated the Charles Owens Appraisal Company which provided real estate appraisal services for over thirty years in the Charlotte area. He moved to Charlotte in 1962 to serve as the city of Charlotte’s first chief right of way agent. During this time he also taught residential real estate appraising at Central Piedmont Community College. Mr Owens was a VA appraiser for over 35 years.
Active in his church until the last few years of his life Charles served as a lector and participated in Bible studies. He was chairman of the Charlotte Catholic High School Board in the late 1960’s.
Survivors include his wife Barbara Owens; sons, Chuck Owens (Julie) of Huntsville, AL, Jim Owens (Marcia) of Charlotte, Dan Owens (Kim) of Mooresville, Bill Owens (Carol) of Cornelius; daughters, Joan Pierson (Duke) of Newark, DE, Anne Owens of Waxhaw, and Cathy Bailey (Bill) of Hillsborough, NC; siblings, Lucille Junkins, Donald Owens, Larry Owens, Dottie Lee; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers Wilton, Coy, Crayton, and Howard, and sisters Margie and Lena.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mark Catholic Church, American Legion Post 86 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The funeral mass will be held at 11 AM Monday, January 6 at St. Mark Catholic Church in Huntersville with burial following at Mt. Zion Community Cemetery in Cornelius. Visitation will be 10-11 AM prior to the service at the church.
