Cherry Cartier's Obituary
Cherry (aka “Sherry”) Victor Cartier, of Huntersville, was born August 22, 1936, in Harlem, New York to the late Sherry and Frederica Jack Cartier. He entered eternal rest on Monday morning, October 22, 2018 at the Levine Dickson Hospice House, Huntersville, NC.
Cherry graduated Bronx Vocational High School in 1954 and entered and served in the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid athlete who enjoyed basketball, swimming, spring board diving, tennis, fishing, and snow skiing. While in the Air Force he was an Air Force featherweight boxer and he earned several aviation certificates including jet engine specialist. He worked for NASA at Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corp. in Bethpage, NY as a Certified Category III Electrical Connections Operator in 1965 where he worked on the Apollo Lunar Module. Cherry worked for 27 years at Pan American Airlines at JFK and LaGuardia Airports as a jet engine mechanic. After Pan American filed for Chapter 11, Cherry relocated to Charlotte, NC where he was employed with US Airways. He moved to Huntersville, NC in 1998 where he retired.
In 1957, Cherry married his teenage sweetheart Vernadine Lowe of The Bronx, NY and from that union three daughters (Chervern, Cherie, and Claire) and one son (Carlton) were born.
Cherry had a carefree personality, was good natured and loved everyone he met greeting them with “God bless you!” and “Have a Blessed Day!”. Cherry loved the Lord and enjoyed attending weekly Life Group meetings where he was known for making his famous potato salad and banana pudding. Cherry took pleasure in traveling around the world to Asia, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. He loved going to the movies, his favorite movies of all time were “Indiana Jones”, “Jurassic Park”, “Pirates of the Caribbean”, and “Back to the Future”. He often filled many hours each day reading and enjoyed studying The Bible in addition to reading books by some of his best-loved authors John Grisham, James Rollins, and Michael Crichton. His favorite music includes artists Marvin Gaye and Arrow’s “Hot Hot Hot”. Cherry had a passion for animals of all kind and could be seen often walking his grand-dog Buttermilk and overfeeding his cat Pepper.
Preceding Cherry in death is his father, Sherry Victor Cartier, his mother, Frederica Jack Cartier, his brothers Austin Cartier, Stratton Howlett, and his sister Gertimore Graham.
Cherry leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 61 years, Vernadine Lowe Cartier, his son Carlton Cartier of Charlotte, NC, his daughters Aaliyah (Chervern) Cartier of Smithtown, NY, Cherie Melson (Lamarr) of Lake Wylie, SC, and Claire Cartier-McDonald (Alexander) of Charlotte, NC; siblings, Randolph Ford of The Bronx, NY, Martha Harris of Long Island, NY, Violet Tomlinson (Theodore) of Long Island, NY, Chrystalia Singleton of Douglasville, GA, Ellita Ausby of Co-op City, New York, and Frederica Quick (Woodrow) of Long Island, NY; sister-in-law Deloris Lewis Lowe of New York City; sister-in-law Catherine (“Sweeter”) Howlett of The Bronx, NY; brother-in-law, John Graham of Lexington, VA; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
The family will receive friends at James Funeral Home from 5-7 PM Sunday, October 28.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, October 29 at The Park Church on Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte. Viewing will be 9:30 -10:30 AM prior. Burial with military honors will follow the service at 1 PM at Salisbury National Cemetery.
