Crystal Roeder's Obituary
Crystal Callicutt Roeder
March 7, 1962 - September 3, 2023
Huntersville, North Carolina - Crystal (Crys) Roeder, 61, entered the Great Garden on September 3rd after a brief, but courageous, battle against colon cancer.
Crys was born on March 7, 1962 in Asheboro, NC to Phillip and Patricia Callicutt. A lifelong North Carolina resident, Crys attended Appalachian State University, graduating in 1984 with 2 majors and 1 minor. After almost a decade in the advertising world (rising to become an Art Director), Crys found a new role that allowed her talent for helping people to really blossom. She joined the faculty at Catawba Valley Community College as an instructor in the Advertising and Graphic Design department. Crys inspired her students with a unique brand of gentle persuasion, often starting out with the phrase, “Have you thought about…”
Crys retired from CVCC in 2012 and planted the seeds for her next path by becoming a certified Pilates instructor. Again, her love of helping others flowered into her opening a successful Pilates studio which she sold in 2017.
Never one to sit idle, and always being creative, Crys then began studying herbalism and became a certified Herbalist which led to her making soaps, teas, and tinctures that were carried by several stores.
After designing a new home and purchasing several acres of land, Crys once again charted a new direction in life by creating an oasis of flower gardens, vegetable gardens, fruit trees, and water features (doing most of the work herself). Crys’ love of plants and thirst for knowledge sprouted into another chapter of her life. In 2021, she became a Mecklenburg County Master Gardener and volunteered countless hours in support of the program. Crys’ volunteerism and sense of giving back continued on the artistic front as she served on the Huntersville Public Arts Commission, and was a member of the Mecklenburg County Arts and Science Council’s North/West Advisory Council, representing Huntersville.
Although she never lived outside of North Carolina, Crys had a wanderlust that took her many places during her life. She loved Paris, and traveled to France on several occasions. She also visited Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Italy, and most recently Scotland. Her other adventures took her from Maine to Sonoma Valley, and many points in between. Crys cared for her dogs (Keller, Snow, Max, Beau, and Belle) and took them on many hikes in the NC mountains.
She truly was a force of nature, constantly learning, constantly helping, and constantly laughing. She touched countless lives in so many different ways. She will be missed.
Crys is survived by her husband, Randy Suggs, and son Alex Roeder of the home, son Zack Roeder of Charlotte, her two stepdaughters Jo Suggs (Nicole) of Plano, TX, and Misti Suggs of Albuquerque, NM, and her aunt Kay Donivant (Jim) of Grimesland, NC.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 25th from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. at the The Cork and Cask, 9624 Bailey Rd, Ste F, Cornelius, NC
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Strides for Life Colon Cancer Foundation (www.stridesforlife.org), or the American Cancer Society.
