Daniel Mayes' Obituary
Daniel Brice "Dan" Mayes, 68, of Huntersville died May 8, 2025. He was born on January 11, 1957 in Charlotte to the late Glenn Rolland Mayes, Jr. and the late Elizabeth McCord Mayes.
Dan was a materials engineer for Duke Energy for nearly 45 years, ultimately serving as the principal engineer for the company’s five PWR nuclear stations steam generator inspection programs. He was recognized as one of the top industry experts for Steam Generator Management Program in the Commercial Nuclear Power industry and was a member of national professional engineering and regulatory committees. In 2019, he received a Duke Operational Excellence Award, and was honored to be part of the team receiving a Best of the Best award from the Nuclear Energy Institute for a digital analysis process for eddy current inspections at Oconee that has become a standard for the industry.
Dan loved his family farm, vegetable garden, and woodlands, and spent many afternoons watching the birds, deer, turkeys and a host of other animals at the farm, or riding the tractor, all while waiting for cousins and friends to stop by.
Deeply devoted to his close and extended family, Dan is survived by his brothers, Glenn (Betsy) and Tom (Rod), his nephew David (Jess), niece Elisa (Matt) and great nieces and nephews Colton, Libby, Annie, and Ivan, as well as many much-loved cousins. His sister Carol preceded him in death.
