David Chu's Obituary
Dr. David Bao-Shan Chu, 92, of Concord passed away Tuesday, September 29, 2015 after a lengthy illness. Born in Shanghai, China of western-educated parents, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1949. After earning a Master’s Degree in business at Baylor University in Texas, he went on to Baylor Medical School and to an internship and residency in New York City where he met his wife of almost 57 years, Gail Cooper. In 1962, after doing a fellowship in cardiology, he practiced in New York for 5 years. In 1967, the couple went as medical missionaries to Jeonju, Korea where he ministered at the Jesus Hospital until 1988. Dr. Chu then worked for the Department of the Army until retirement.
The couple had five children; Philip (Jeannie) of St. Cloud, MN, Luisa (David) of Concord, Lydia (Tim) of Houston, TX, Peter (Ryn) of Asheville, and Davy (Pey) of Concord. He is also survived by a sister, Rosalind Chu of Concord, 18 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A private burial will be held at NorthLake Memorial Gardens in Huntersville. A memorial service and luncheon will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church, 551-C Pitts School Rd NW., Concord, NC 28027 on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to the Missionary Outreach Program at Jesus Hospital in Jeonju. Checks can be made payable to Providence Presbyterian Church, 551-C Pitts School Road NW, Concord, NC 28027 with “In memory of Dr. David Chu” printed on the memo line.
