David Harris Gant's Obituary
David Harris "Harry" Gant, 87 of Huntersville. Passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Saturday February 21, 2015. Born to the late Dewy Spencer and Ruby Busick Gant on September 25, 1927 in Greensboro.
Lived a very full life growing up in and around the Huntersville area working with his family at their saw mill as a young boy. Served loyally in the Navy on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt at the end of WWII and began his brick laying career. He would later go on to form his own Masonry company McCord & Gant with Business partner and friend Dave McCord. Being a skilled craftsman over his 45 year career he contributed to the city scape with schools, churches, commercial buildings and homes. Served the community in various ways including his 14 years on the Huntersville city council which would lead to his election as Mayor in 1971. His dedication to his community lead to his interest in the Freemasons which he served and was active member of the Long Creek Lodge and the Williams Masonic Lodge and was inducted as the Grandmaster of the Williams Lodge in 1978. He was a happy man that could bring a smile to anyone's face a traveler, adventurer and social butterfly spending his time dancing through life with his late wife of 55 years and school yard sweet heart Sophia D. Gant. Harry, a devout Christian was a member of the First Baptist Church of Huntersville which him and his father contributed to the construction in the early years of the ministry. He also attended regular service at the Freedom Baptist Church in Fancy Gap VA, his second home. His service to the Lord lead him to attend regular annual Mission trips across the US with Sunset Road Baptist Church and his travels reached as Far as Germany to Help Churches in need. Harry was a selfless man a proud wonderful loving Husband, Daddy, Grandpa, Papaw, Great grandpa, and great-great Grandpa.
He was survived by Daughters Ann Gant Elmore and Husband Richard and Charity Gant. Grandson David Gregory, granddaughters Nicole Breschea and Krystal Riters. 8 Great Grand Children and 1 great-great Grandchild. Brother to, the late James and surviving wife Allyne, Glen and wife Peggy, Letitia “tish” and Late husband Merle, and Spencer and wife Harriett. Married in 2004 to Eloise Bebber-Gant.
He was proceeded to Heaven by Parents, Ruby & Dewy, wife Sophia, Daughter Angela Dee Gant, older brother James and great grandson.
He was especially close to many friends that he all considered family it is impossible to name the countless that have been a special part of his life but the family would like to extend special thanks to a few that were near and dear to his heart. His special friend Pearl Calvert which stuck by his side day in and day out, his god sent care giver Claudia Hargis and friends Michael Callas, Kenneth Brown & Bob Johnson.
Visitation Service to be held at James Funeral home on Thursday, February 26th at 5 pm-7pm, 10520 Arahova Dr., Huntersville NC, 28078 and Funeral Services to be held at the First Baptist Church of Huntersville on Friday, February 27th at 11 am, 119 N. Old Statesville Rd. Huntersville NC 28078.
