Denise Kay Miera's Obituary
Denise Kay Miera, aged 68, residing in Denver, North Carlina passed away on Sunday, September 11th, from complications of a kidney infection.
Born on February 16th, 1954, Denise grew up and lived most of her life in Northern Virginia. Highly motivated, Denise’s achievements began early, such as graduating after only three years at Woodbridge High School. Fiercely independent, but incredibly devoted to family, she put down roots locally near her parents while pursuing a nearly 40 year career with the Department of Homeland Security, where she retired as a high ranking official. In appreciation for her service, an American flag was flown over the Capitol at her retirement. Not one to sit idly, she found great pleasure in a part time retirement job at a local elementary school. She adored children and taking little moments to engage and hear their sweet stories was always time perfectly spent.
Her greatest life achievement was as a mother. Married at 35 to Joe Miera, she bore two sons, Michael, who was called to Heaven at birth, and Matthew, age 29. She loved Matthew unconditionally and ensured the door to home was always open (and the kitchen well-stocked) no matter where life took him. She not only poured her heart into motherhood, but also tirelessly cared for her husband who suffered long-term health issues, as well as her parents. Her burden was heavy and yet she never complained.
Upon the passing of Joe and Matthew’s successful flight into adulthood, Denise made plans. For the first time in her life, she left Virginia last year for a new adventure in the outskirts of Charlotte, NC. She spent her days in the company of local family, trying new restaurants and meticulously decorating her gorgeous, newly built home. Among her many talents, she had a flawless eye for interior design.
She was selfless to the point of awe-inspiring and self reliant to a fault. Denise was utterly classic - a lady who was quick to laugh and enjoyed simple pleasures.
She is survived by her ever loving and eternally grateful son, Matthew Miera, as well as brothers Dennis and Ray Brewer. Denise joins her husband, parents (Merle & Katherine Brewer), and son Michael in Heaven.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 16, from 12:00 PM at James Funeral Home with a visitation and refreshments one hour prior. The family will also receive friends with refreshments one hour prior at 11:00 and after the funeral service.
