Donald Gilliam's Obituary
Donald "Rocky" Eugene Gilliam, Jr., 72, of Charlotte died August 26, 2022. He was born on May 17, 1950 to the late Donald and Arlene Gilliam.
Rocky was born and raised in Charleston, WV. He developed interest for many different sports, especially football which he started at an early age, and later participated in baseball, golf, tennis and running. His passion for sports was shared with youth through coaching and encouraging others. He had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Rocky served in the United States Air Force beginning in 1971 in aerospace warning and defense including time stationed in the South Pacific and retiring as a Sargent. After service, Rocky completed his bachelor’s degree in law enforcement at Florida International University. Rocky had an entrepreneurial spirit throughout his career that reached into others lives to nourish their talent and inspire greatness.
A man of great faith who loved the Lord, Rocky enjoyed sharing the gospel. His faith remained strong while always encouraging and praying for others in their walk through difficult times. He was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, and they supported each other deeply through everything. He took great joy in family recognizing the gift each child and grandchild was to him.
Survivors include his wife Celeste Gilliam; son Aaron Gilliam of Jupiter, FL; daughter, Kristie Gilliam of Coral Springs, FL; step-son Jason Stitt and wife Bekah of Huntersville, NC; and grandchildren, Gabriella, Dominick, Christian, Kara, Caleb and Cameron.
Memorials may be made to Grace Covenant Church or Love Life Charlotte.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 PM Thursday, September 1 at James Funeral Home. Visitation will be 2-3 PM prior at the funeral home.
The burial with military honors will be held at 10 AM Friday, September 2 at Salisbury National Cemetery.
