Donald Ray Wilson's Obituary
Mr. Donald R. Wilson, 64, of Charlotte, passed away Friday, February 19, 2016 after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.
A native of Athens, Georgia, Don was born June 23, 1951 to Athel and Gertrude Wilson. The family moved to Virginia when Don was 5. He graduated from Orange County High School in 1969. He then graduated from Bluefield College in 1972 earning an AS degree in Business Administration. In 1973, he earned a BS degree in Business Management from Virginia Tech. Don worked for Electronic Data Systems and General Motors for 26 years in information technology where he held a variety of technical and management positions in New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and North Carolina. After retirement he worked at Lowe’s Home Improvement for six years. Don was a resident of Charlotte for 30 years and a member of Mecklenburg Community Church. One of his passions was working with youth. Don was an Eagle Scout and volunteered with the Boy Scouts as an assistant scout master. He also volunteered for the American Youth Soccer Organization for 16 years as a coach, referee, instructor, board member, and area director; neighborhood swim coach, and for 15 years with the children’s programs at Mecklenburg Community Church. Don was a former member of the University City YMCA board of managers and the Homeowner Association Board of Directors where he earned his loving title as “The Mayor”.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother-in-law; Dave Bappe.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife, Carol Wilson, their children; Dawn Rae Wilson, Todd Ross Wilson, brothers; Dale Wilson (Liz), Doyle Wilson (Katie), sister, Norma Bappe, and several beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2016 at James Funeral Home of Huntersville with Rev. Rick Harwell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mecklenburg Community Church Children’s Programs, 8335 Browne Rd., Charlotte, NC 28269 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
