Donna Cameron's Obituary
Donna Cameron of Concord, NC completed her earthly journey on December 7, 2016 and entered into her eternal life. She was the oldest daughter of Walter and Alta Shepherd, born on November 1, 1940, and grew up in Laurel Springs North Carolina (Ashe County). She married Neill William Cameron on January 2, 1960, and they enjoyed a full life and marriage for more than 56 years. They were blessed with two daughters, Phyllis Ann Cameron (deceased) and Deborah Maelene Cameron. Phyllis was a talented nurse and medical professional prior to her death in 2011. Deborah married Mark N. Courtney, and they reside in Glen Allen, Virginia with their two daughters – Laura Nicole Courtney (17) and Allison Noel Courtney (15) – who were loving granddaughters to Donna.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her older brother Conley Shepherd and his wife Wilma Shepherd, sisters-in-law Betty Shepherd and Evelyn Cameron. She is survived by her husband Neill, her oldest brother William Clifford Shepherd, and younger sister Alice Lee Shepherd Poe (Allen). Also, brothers- and sisters-in law Leon Cameron, James Cameron (Sally), Charles Cameron (Pat), and Mary Cameron McNeal (Russell). She also has many nieces and nephews.
In her earthly journey, Donna was a loving mother and wife, and was a retired teachers’ assistant with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Donna had many friends, and her love of teaching and her love for people was evident to everyone she met. She was an active member of Ramah Presbyterian Church, teaching children’s Sunday School and participant with Women of the Church. In 2006, she and Neill moved in to The Gardens of Taylor Glen, where she made many friends and a lasting legacy through the Hooks and Needles Club. An avid and talented crafter, Donna brought her love of crocheting to Taylor Glen, and started the Hooks and Needles Club to make lap robes for Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County. Donna brought together those who already knew how to knit and crochet, and taught many others the craft, and together the Club has made and donated over 3,000 beautiful lap robes to Hospice patients. The beautiful lap robes gave her much joy, as did helping others to crochet and create these lasting items of comfort.
Donna’s family expresses heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the residents and staff of The Gardens at Taylor Glen, for their friendship, fellowship, love and support during her long illness. Donna was loved by the residents and staff at Taylor Glen, and she loved each of them in return. In addition, the family is so thankful to the doctors and staff from Levine Cancer Institute (Dr. David Turner and staff) who provided exceptional and caring treatment and support for Donna.
Donna was highly sensitive to floral scents, so in lieu of flowers, remembrances for Donna may be made to the Hooks and Needles Club of Taylor Glen, or to Ramah Presbyterian Church.
Services to celebrate Donna’s life will be held on Friday, December 9, 2016, at 2:00 PM, at Ramah Presbyterian Church in Huntersville. Burial will follow in church cemetery. .
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at church.
