Doris Brown's Obituary
Doris Winifred Gibson Brown went to be with her Heavenly Father on June 18, 2012 at Wilora Lake Healthcare Center, Charlotte, NC. Our loving Mother Doris/Mom was born on July 6, 1916 in the Gilead Community, Mecklenburg County, and was the daughter of the late Lucy Jane Beard Gibson and Albert Derr Gibson.
During WW II, Mrs. Brown worked at the Shell Plant and at Efird’s Department Store in Charlotte. At age 55, she began working at Joe’s Fabric Shop where she was employed for 23 years. A wonderful seamstress, she made all her clothes, as well as those of her daughters while growing up. Mrs. Brown was known for her beautiful quilts and Christmas Carolers that are cherished by her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband Welbern Clegg Brown, Sr. in 1978 and her three brothers: Kenneth, Louis and Mason, four sisters: Edna, Leona Belle, Catherine and Mildred, two grandchildren: Renee Brown Johnson and George (JR) Frederickson.
She is survived by two sons; Welbern Clegg Brown, Jr. of Mooresville and John Baxter Brown of Loris, SC., five daughters; Marlene and husband Bob Jones of Charlotte, Jeanette Anderson of Knoxville, TN, Carolyn and husband Mike Moore of Charlotte, Elizabeth (Betty Ann) and husband Bill Smith of Danville, VA and Elaine and husband James Houser of Stanley, NC, fifteen grandchildren; Tommy Cowart, Mark Jones, Michele Regan, Jimmy Anderson, Jennifer Moore, Julie Beeler, David Moore, Mark Moore, Rick Moore, Greg Moore, Patrick Smith, Alan Smith, Chris Houser, Brian Houser and Shaun Houser, twenty-seven great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and three special nieces; Connie McCoy, Barbara Pope and Faye Lovelace.
We appreciate all the dear friends that she had at Wilora Lake Lodge and the care and concern by the staff at the Healthcare Center and Hospice.
Doris was a lifelong member of Gilead A.R.P. Church, as well as the oldest living member. The family expresses deep gratitude to Pastor Hunter for his loving, spiritual care during our mother’s long illness.
The family will miss their beloved mother!
