Dorothy Barberie's Obituary
Dorothy Emma Jache Barberie, age 97, of Davidson, NC formerly of Peoria, IL, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at The Pines retirement community.
Dorothy (Dosh as she was known to her family) was born in Dayton, Ohio on May 16, 1919 to Paul and Anna Mae Jache. She married John Douglas (Doug) Barberie in Ohio on August 30, 1947. He preceded her in death on December 26, 2008. A brother, Fred and sister, Glad also preceded her in death. Dorothy is survived by her children Katherine (Michael) Hasselberg, Anne (John) Hardy, Susan (Thomas) Wear, Dr. Nancy (Jeffery) Tarte and Paul (Jennifer). She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Dorothy attended Steele High School in Dayton and graduated from Miami University (Ohio). She was a member of Tri Delta Sorority. After graduation she was employed by the Girl Scouts of America and by the Red Cross during WWII. Following their marriage Dorothy and Doug moved to Peoria, IL, where Doug accepted a position with Caterpillar Americas. The young family also lived in Brazil and Chile before returning to Peoria.
Dorothy will be remembered as an avid reader and a great cook--her children and grandchildren still use many of her recipes. An accomplished seamstress, she sewed many of the family’s clothes as well as toys for her grandchildren. She even sewed all of her daughters’ wedding dresses! When her children were young, she volunteered in Scouting programs. A founding member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria, she was active in United Presbyterian Women and many other church committees. She stayed active playing both tennis and golf. After Doug’s retirement they enjoyed volunteering at Wildlife Prairie Park in Illinois and traveling. They moved to The Pines in North Carolina in 1998, where she immediately immersed herself in community activities.
Dorothy was a peacemaker and led a joy-filled life. She was also an ardent Cubs fan. We are sure that upon arriving in heaven, after mixing a bourbon and water, she and Dad celebrated the Cubbies winning the World Series!
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 705 Griffith St, Davidson, NC 28036 or Girl Scouts Hornets Nest Council, 7007 Idlewild Rd, Charlotte, NC 28212. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at The Pines and Hospice of Lake Norman for their many years of superb care of our mother.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. James Funeral Home is assisting the family.
