Dorothy Buchanan's Obituary
Dorothy Lee Turner Buchanan, 92, of Charlotte died June 18 at her home. She was born on December 12, 1932, in Langley, SC to the late Willie and Carrie Turner.
Dorothy was characterized as a determined, tenacious, and independent lady who loved God, friends, family, and her church. Amazingly, her independence and strength were evident in her ability to keep up with ever-changing technologies, and in her continuing to live alone and to drive herself around until this past spring. She always did her best to ‘keep on keeping on’.
Her love for family was a true sacrifice. After the death of her first husband, with the youngest of her four children still living at home, she headed to nursing school. After receiving her degree, she worked many years taking care of Alzheimer's patients at Huntersville Oaks and went on to become caregiver to several clients after she retired. As the years passed, she would spend many times cheering on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren on the sidelines at their various sporting events, graduations, and concerts, rarely missing an activity. There was nothing that would hold her back from living life to the fullest.
Her love of God was displayed in her many years of service and attendance at her church Sunset Road Baptist church. She had many close friends from church and enjoyed spending time in her Sunday School Class and Sonlighters ministry. She gave to various Christian ministries helping advance the gospel. Her reliance on the Lord would come through often in her words of "It is what it is" knowing and trusting God's plan for her life.
She was a collector of all things. She and her late husband, Ira, had a booth at the Pineville Flea Market, where they sold sundry items and clothing. They enjoyed searching for and collecting antiques and treasures.
She enjoyed spending time sitting on the beach, watching the ocean, and listening to beach music Also, God had gifted her with a green thumb. She loved to garden and grow various beautiful plants, flowers, and vegetables.
As you can see, her legacy will be remembered, and she will be missed greatly! It was a blessing to her that she was surrounded in love by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, with whom she made many memories!
She was preceded in death by husbands, Ira Buchanan and William Tullis as well as her son William Tullis.
Survivors include her daughters, Sheryl Martin (Johnny) of Charlotte, Pamela Tilford (Steve) of Statesville and Bonnie Kerwin (Ron) of N. Myrtle Beach; and grandchildren (Melanie, Shea, Carrie, Jeremy, Tammy, Candy, Tiffany, and Rachel) and great-grandchildren (Thomas, Molly, Joseph, Sydney, Jeremy, Paxton, Kyler, and Briar).
A special thank you to the owners and many wonderful caregivers of Amada Senior Care (Evon, Chanelle, Shenitra, Lisa - and many others) and Hospice, who loved Ms. Dorothy through her last days.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or Sunset Road Baptist Church.
