Douglas Lee Johnston's Obituary
Douglas Lee Johnston passed away peacefully at his home in Davidson, North Carolina. A friend to many, a jack of many trades, Doug will be remembered as a generous, creative and loving soul. Born in Oakland, California, Doug graduated from Bishop O’Dowd High School and San Jose State University, then migrated to the Pacific Northwest where he married and raised a family. Doug was an entrepreneurial spirit, whose passions included the art of jewelry making, collecting Chinese art and jade, theater performance, as well as writing books and plays.
In the second half of his life, he was blessed to meet Sharon Marie Culp, his great love and wife of nearly 30 years. Before she passed away in May 2021, they enjoyed and embraced life together in North Carolina before and after living for a short time in Florida. No one made him happier than she did. In his last few years since her death, he made new friends at Williams Place in Davidson and at Love Lake Norman Church in Cornelius, North Carolina.
He was a proud grandfather, constantly sharing the many accomplishments of his Oregon and North Carolina families. Doug will be deeply missed by his children, Patrick and Alexsandra Johnston, and his grandchildren Luke and Rory Johnston. He will also be missed by Sharon’s children Chris Culp (Heather), Susan Sanders (James), Stephen Culp (Meg) and Derek Culp, grandchildren Jessica Schultze, Christopher Culp, Tyler Leach, Michael Sanders, Leo and Avery Culp, and Sam, Mimi and Eliza Culp and great grandchildren Tatum, Makena and Zoey Leach and Gabe and Adalyn Schultze.
James Funeral Home in Huntersville is taking care of his final arrangements, and there will be a private burial service at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte to be scheduled at a later date.
