Dr. Hallam Walker's Obituary
Dr. Hallam Walker, 90, of Davidson, NC, died January 12, 2012, at The Pines. He was born on May 23, 1921, in Newark, NJ, to the late William Alexander and Marion Hallam Walker. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Lt. JG. He earned his Ph.D. in French literature from Princeton University. Dr. Walker taught French at Washington and Lee University, Duke University and Davidson College, from which he retired in 1985. He was an avid sailor and served as commodore of the Lake Norman Yacht Club and the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association and was a certified judge for US Sailing. He also was president of the Flying Scot Sailing Association. He coached the Davidson College and Duke University sailing teams. Hallam was a Boy Scout leader for many years in Davidson. He had many hobbies including vacationing at the beach, sailing, skiing, bird watching, hiking, camping, traveling and volunteering at the Carolina Raptor Center and Habitat for Humanity. He was a great supporter of nature conservancy and was a life long learner in every way.
He is survived by his wife Catherine Niemitz Walker; daughter Susan Walker of Cornelius; daughter-in-law Joanne Walker of Benicia, CA; grandchildren Amy and Katie Wood and Robert and Anna Walker. He is preceded in death by his son Steven Walker.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at Davidson United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jody Seymour and Rev. Berta Spencer officiating. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall. The family will also receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 PM in the Marshall Room at The Pines.
