Michele, Cheryl and Steve- We are so saddened by the loss of our your precious Harvey. Our condolences to all of the family during this very difficult time. Our prayers and thoughts are with you every day. Love and prayers and may God give you peace and comfort.
We are very sorry to hear of Harvey's passing.
I know my father "Hutch" loved Harvey and together with their merry band of faculty rascals in the days of Bonnie Cone, kept the Administration of the college in stitches with their pranks and hi-jinks...such wonderful and funny stories of the early days of Harvey coaching the basketball team, and starting the PE program. I learned to swim in the pool of the old "Mine Shaft" and remember that red shock of hair when I would see him. I was just a child, but he was always so kind and friendly to me. I remember them telling their many fond reminisces at every opportunity.
Gwen sends her condolences. We will always remember you all with a nod and warm smiles.
When I first arrived at UNC Charlotte, and started teaching in (what was then still) the Department of Health and Physical Education, I was neither an academic, nor a physical education nor health professional. I was half time in the department and half-time in the Student Affairs Division. My field was experiential education in the model of Outward Bound. I had never previously had to develop college level academic curriculum nor grade student assignments. So I was very fortunate to come in under the tutelage of Dr. Murphy. With his gentle nudging and guidance and our informative annual reviews, I slowly developed into a competent college faculty. Years later (in large part due to the early guidance and support from Dr. Murphy) I was able to advance to the level of senior lecturer. I am also thankful for the professional culture and supportive environment that Harvey helped create in the department that made me feel welcomed and valued. I know that Dr. Murphy touched a lot of peopleās lives and helped them on their paths forward. I am fortunate to have been one of those individuals. Thank you Dr. Murphy and Michele who stood at his side.
Dear Michelle,
Although many of the Murphy family cannot be there to support you personally, I want you to know that we are there in spirit with hugs and prayers. Uncle Harvey could not have chosen a prettier, smarter and loving partner than you. Harvey, being my young kid uncle, gave me fond memories of times spent with him. He would take me to the city "play ground" and no one would dare to bully me! I totally looked up to him.
Michelle:
So very sorry to hear of your loss. Although I never met Harvey,
I remember him answering the telephone when I called you. He
was always so very kind. If you remember, you helped me through
a breast cancer diagnosis at my young age of 40. You were an angel
who appeared to me and I will never forget that experience. I pray
for peace as you grieve your loss. I read that you were married for
49 yrs. and wanted you to know that Ron and I will be married for
49 yrs. this March.

Michelle: Betsy and I want to express our condolences to your and your family. As you know, Harvey was close to us. I remember his driving up our driveway when he came to interview tor the coaches position. Being associated with him all of the years at Charlotte College (Harrisburg HS gym) , UNCC and our home was always a comfortable relationship. We are happy he found a new life with you and your family. He talked frequently about you and Steve
particularly and his love for the family. He was an extra special friend of ours, and we have very good memories of this friendship. Betsy and Jim
I first met Harvey in 1962 at the new campus of Charlotte College soon to be UNC Charlotte. He has had a very positive impact on my life. We both grew up in that University under the guidance of Miss Bonnie. He was always asking me questions, especially sports questions. Learned a lot from him about sports and about life. I will miss seeing him.
We rejoice with Michelle and her family in Harvey's homecoming;
We shed tears of sorrow with you for your loss;
We lift you up in our hearts for peace and comfort;
And we pray that each day gets better and better.
