My condolences to the family, especially to Mary Alice, whom I had the pleasure of spending Friday afternoons with back in 1989. I was Dr. Manning's advisee, an awkward and slightly homesick freshman, and to make me feel more at ease, he had me come to the house on Fridays to "babysit" for Mary Alice, who in no way needed it. But the family kindly indulged me and Mary Alice and I did laundry and watched soap operas together. Dr. Manning was so representative of the best of Davidson: a professor who infused learning with passion and enthusiasm, and a person with a kind and welcoming heart. He undoubtedly touched so many students in this way, and I hope that is a comfort.
