Dr. Abram Mack's Obituary
Dr. Thomas A. Mack, 81, of Huntersville, NC peacefully passed away on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. A native of Darlington, S.C., he was born May 17, 1932 to the late Rev. Abraham Mack and Ruth Alford Mack. He graduated from Mayo High School and attended Claflin College, as had his mother and aunts. After completing his first two years, he transferred to North Carolina A&T State University and later received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to pursuing higher education at Fisk University. Next, Dr. Mack attended Howard University’s College of Dentistry. Here, he met his future wife Wildred Morrison. They married in 1959 and from this union three children were born.
In 1961, Dr. Mack received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Howard University, and next completed an internship in oral surgery at Harlem Hospital in New York. Having obtained his professional credentials, he moved his family to Charlotte, North Carolina in 1962 and began his career as a dentist that would continue until the time of his death. Initially, he worked for the North Carolina Division of Oral Hygiene providing dentistry to children in Charlotte and across the state. He would also open his private practice in 1963 at the Dalebrook Professional Center. After 10 years of traveling service with the state, Dr. Mack decided to focus his efforts in the Charlotte community and joined the Mecklenburg County Health Department. His duties would go on to include teaching and mentoring at Central Piedmont Community College. Also, he was an attending dentist at Carolinas Medical Center. Most recently, he was with Affordable Dentures in Charlotte, NC. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him in his 50 years of serving the community.
Dr. Mack’s greatest joy in his life came from his family. He is survived by his sister, Ruth Mack Gray (Los Angeles, CA), and his brother and sister-in-law, John and Harriett Mack, (Los Angeles, CA); daughter and her husband, Cina Mack and Howard Fitts (Durham, NC); sons, Maurice Mack, and Thomas Mack and his wife Karol (Huntersville, NC); grandchildren, Erin and Theodore Mack (Huntersville, NC) and Alexandra Fitts (Durham, NC); nephew, Anthony Mack (Los Angeles, CA; nieces, Andria Mack (Los Angeles, CA) and Deborah Mack (Silver Spring, MD) and other loving family members.
The family would like to extend thanks to Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman as well as Dr. John Mahoney and staff. Also, a special thanks to Dr. C. Gregory Martin and the entire staff at Affordable Dentures.
