I was fortunate to know Dwight for 25 years. He was a wonderful person, leader, mentor and friend. All I can do is smile when i think of Dwight.
My first meaningful interaction with Dwight was after I moved from New Jersey to Charlotte. I did not know what I was getting into. It was in the early days of FUBS, and they set me up in a supply closet (aka office) just outside of Dwight's office. I was in Charlotte a couple months and settling into the new job.
One early afternoon, I got a knock on my supply closet office. It's Dwight asking me if I had anything going on. I said yes but you're the boss and I'll drop anything to help. He said great. Get your sneakers and gym clothes because we are going to play basketball the rest of the day..
We played 3 on 3 the rest of the day and after a spirited game, Dwight bought us all ice cream. Post this experience, I thought to myself that this is the greatest place to work and Dwight was the most awesome leader!
After 25 years, I was able to retire early primarily due to abundant opportunities afforded me by Dwight and a few other great leaders and friends. Upon my retirement, Dwight was among the first to congratulate me via text. Instead of setting back a text, I picked up the phone as I really wanted to check in and see how he was doing. We had a great conversation as we discussed nothing in particular but just life in general.
I asked if he was going to make it to the annual fishing trip and he said the cancer was just beating him up. He mentioned that he will miss this year's trip but will be there in spirit. He was as many of the best fish stories included Dwight.
We concluded our conversation that day with the exchange of mutual I Love You's. I feel so fortunate to have expressed my true feelings to Dwight. Dwight truly changed my life and I could not thank him enough. We lost a great one with the passing of Dwight Moody!
