Earl Leatherwood's Obituary
Earl J. Leatherwood, 86, of Huntersville, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and his beloved dog "Strawberry" on Friday July 30, 2021. He was born on June 20, 1935, in Belmont NC, to the late Ed and Mable Leatherwood. He attended Appalachian State University and later served in the US Army.
Earl worked most of his career as a computer programmer and retired in 2001 from the Mecklenburg County ABC Board as Chief Financial Officer. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed most all college sports and the Carolina Panthers. He coached both of his sons in baseball, basketball and was an Optimist Club basketball referee for many years. He had a passion for tennis and taught his sons the sport and was glued to the TV each year during the Wimbledon Championships.
Earl is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary, his two sons Marc Leatherwood (Sally) of Charlotte and Jon Leatherwood (Wendy) of Dallas. He is also survived by four grandchildren who he loved dearly - Michael, Megan, Ty and Alex.
Earl was a very active member of Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC, where he served in several roles including Sunday School Teacher, Deacon, Elder, Treasurer and church secretary upon his retirement from the corporate world.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Tuesday August 3, 2021 at Williams Memorial Presbyterian Church with receiving friends at 10 am. Graveside services will follow immediately after at Hopewell Presbyterian Church.
