Edna Kersey's Obituary
Edna Earl Gilley Kersey, 86, died May 13, 2012 at her home in Huntersville, North Carolina.
She was born on May 12, 1926 in Bremen, Georgia to the late Carrie and John Gilley. Edna was one of seven children and is survived by her sister Atta Clovis McCord of Carrollton, Georgia.
She is preceded in death by her siblings, Tybee, Hoyt, Jimmy, J.T., and Keet; and her husband, Laverne E. Kersey.
Edna met her future husband at the Grant Park swimming pool in Atlanta, Georgia, in the summer of 1942. She was with her sister, happily receiving the attentions of the many dashing young soldiers home on leave, when Verne strode up and boldly told the other young men to “Get away from my wife!” It was love at first sight. They were married in July 1945, only a few months after Verne returned from the war. He had been captured at the Battle of the Bulge and endured months in a POW camp with little to eat. She loved to cook for him and made it her mission to make up for those many missed meals. Edna and Verne settled down in Atlanta and raised three wonderful children. Verne was the love of her life and they were happily married for 43 years. Verne died in 1989.
Edna was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, North Carolina and active in the Senior Ramblers group. She was a Godly woman and loved to share her faith. She was an avid reader and frequently gave books as gifts. She loved celebrating birthdays and took pleasure in making the cake for that special person. Her sweet tooth was unparalleled, and she enjoyed sharing that passion with others. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who believed the love we share with others is what makes it all worthwhile. She was the epitome of a gracious southern lady.
Edna is survived by her children, Cindy Barrett and her fiancé Alan Juda, Daria Bodenheimer and her husband Steve, and Ron Kersey and his wife Margie; her grandchildren, Savannah Barrett, Kevin Kersey, Kim Wasley, and Kristina Barrett; and numerous nieces and nephews whom she adored.
Memorials can be made to Bethel Presbyterian Church, 19920 Bethel Church Road, Cornelius, NC 28031.
A funeral service will be held at 7 PM Thursday, May 17, 2012 at Bethel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Bill Cain officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-7 prior at the church. Interment will take place Saturday at Fairview Cemetery, Stockbridge, GA.
