Edward Lewis Griffin's Obituary
On July 20, 2023, Ed Griffin passed on from this earth at the age of 95, leaving a legacy of love and gratitude. Ed was born in Odum, Georgia, and was the youngest of six children. He made his impact on this world through the love for his family, his kindness, thoughtfulness and eagerness to share a corny joke or a story from his past. Ed was a die hard fan of the Carolina Tar Heels and the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR (although it hasn’t been the same since Carl Edwards retired). Fishing was a lifelong love of Ed’s, whether it was at a local pond or on Lake Lochloosa in Florida. He just enjoyed being on the water.
For 65 years, Ed worked for the United States Postal Service. To mark 50 years of service, the postmaster shut down the General Mail Facility in Charlotte to hold a recognition ceremony. The Post Office also sent him and his wife, Rachel, on a trip to Washington, DC. Ed didn’t retire until years later at the age of 82. In retirement, his travels included trips to Nashville, Branson and New Orleans. For the 70th anniversary of the D-Day invasion, Ed joined his brother Herbert, a D-Day veteran, on a trip to France to take part in the celebration. They also flew together on an Honor Flight for veterans to visit the monuments in Washington, DC. Ed proudly served in the Army at the end of World War II.
Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rachel Griffin; his sons Doug (Paula), Greg (Carmen) and Matt (Caroline); his grandchildren, Alexandra, Christian and Gabrielle; his brother Herbert Griffin, as well as many cherished in-laws, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm, Saturday, July 29, at James Funeral Home of Huntersville. The family will receive friends between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm. In tribute to Ed’s love of the Carolina Tar Heels, guests are welcomed to wear a light blue item of clothing.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
