Elizabeth Dianna Selden's Obituary
Elizabeth Dianna Dickins Selden, 71, of Charlotte, died November 9, 2016 at Levine and Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC. Dianna was born in England but spent most of her adult life in North Carolina. She is survived by her 5 children and their spouses, 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, and her brother Philip. She was predeceased by her husband, brother and granddaughter. She touched countless lives with her strong, generous spirit. Dianna served as a surrogate parent, faithful friend, mentor and confidante for many families. She was a caregiver at heart, and all who knew her benefitted from her presence.
Her grandchildren share their favorite Grandma Di characteristics and memories to capture her spirit and personality:
She gave intense hugs and kisses on the cheek that instantly made me feel loved
She bounced me on her knee while singing British nursery rhymes with her great accent.
She had a beautiful, loving, warm smile that made it really easy to talk and laugh with her.
She will be the most stubborn, loving person I ever had the privilege to know.
Grandma Di told stories about our parents’ childhoods and of her recklessness in her younger years without an ounce of regret in her voice.
She was tough as nails, stubborn as hell, but so loyal in her love for her family and friends.
She could be stern when needed, but was also warm and kindhearted. She always said what was on her mind.
Fur coats and sky-high heels will always conjure up a vision of Grandma.
Grandma could walk tall, dress well, and love her family like no one else.
Anyone who knew Grandma, also knew that she loved birds.
She could conquer the world in her stilettos.
She loved gardening, knitting and throwing fabulous dinner parties. If you never experienced her amazing trifle or had a piece of her shortbread, then you missed out. “Lady Di” truly will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Levine and Dickson Hospice House or to the American Lung Association. A funeral service in celebration of Dianna’s life will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at 1 p.m., St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Monroe, NC.
