Elizabeth "Betty" Ferguson Shinn's Obituary
Elizabeth "Betty" Ferguson Shinn, of Huntersville, peacefully passed away on June 8, 2023, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 17, 1935, in Cabarrus County, NC to the late Walter Atlas and Margaret Keenan Ferguson, living most of her life in Huntersville.
Betty was a long-time member of Hopewell Baptist church in Davidson. Leading by example of being a believer of Christ, she lived as a lifelong woman of God loving to read her Bible and was a devoted prayer warrior. She was very involved in the church teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and a member of Women on Missions. She was also a proud member of the Eastern Star Westgate Chapter No. 343.
After 23 years, Betty retired from the Duke Power Company in 2003. Not being one to sit in a rocker and let her retirement years go by, Ms. Shinn became a CMS (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools) Substitute Teacher for 13 years teaching students at North Mecklenburg, Mallard Creek, and Hough High Schools. Also, she loved spending her time sewing, gardening, baking, and cooking for her family, especially her grandkids.
Betty enjoyed so much in life by traveling to the Holy Land and to Egypt with her husband, Eugene. Later, she would climb onboard with Christian Tours and travel with her sisters to see the various parts of the United States including Hawaii and Alaska.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, William Eugene Shinn; five brothers; four sisters; and one great grandson. She is survived by her two daughters, Charlotte Gail Shinn, and Darlene Shinn Hinson (Terry); grandson, Ethan Miller (Lee Ziglar); granddaughters, Mandy Flannery (Paul), Melanie Padgett (Randal), and Maggie Smith; and six great grandchildren.
The services will be held on Sunday, June 11, at Hopewell Baptist Church in Davidson, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 PM and the Celebration of Life service at 3:00 PM with The Reverend Sammy Pierce officiating. The interment will be at the church cemetery following the services.
