Ewell Washington Hopper,'s Obituary
Ewell “Dub” Washington Hopper, Jr., 88, of Charlotte, N.C. died Sunday, June 2, 2013 at his home. He was born July 21, 1924 in York, S.C. to the late Ewell Washington Hopper, Sr. and Maggie Mae Paire Hopper.
He attended Rock Hill High School where he was an avid sportsman receiving thirteen varsity letters. He was elected in 1942 to play in the All Star Shrine Bowl Game for South Carolina. Coach Walter Jenkins admired Dub as an outstanding athlete and once wrote, “Dub is a fine boy with clean habits.”
After high school, Dub entered the Navy branch of the military and served his country with five of his brothers in World War ll. After the war he received an athletic scholarship to attend the University of Virginia, lettering in two sports. After graduation he attended Appalachian State and received his Masters in History. It was there that he met Marian Overby, who would later become his wife.
Dub and Marian were married and were blessed with three children, Doug, Susan, and Carol. Dub and Marian enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children. Dub shared a love of animals with Susan and Carol and he shared his passion for boating and sports with Doug. He gave and cherished many years as a well-respected, knowledgeable, and generous employee to Ames Company. He loved and cared endlessly for “ His Men” until he retired. He remained close friends with them throughout his life.
Dub “Papa” was a fun loving grandfather who adored Anna, Rachel, Laura, and Straton. He enjoyed laughing, dancing and joking with them and found such joy in their “giggles.” He became a great grandfather two years ago to Cash. Over the last several months Cash became Papa’s best friend. They shared a unique love for ice cream, and any “junk food” that could be dipped in ketchup.
Survivors include his wife, Marian Hopper of Charlotte, N.C.; son Doug Hopper ( Debbie) of Huntersville, N.C.; daughters Susan Hopper and Carol Rogers of Blowing Rock, N.C.; Grandchildren Anna Hopper of Beaverton,Oregon, Rachel, Laura and Straton Hopper all of Huntersville, N.C.; and a great-grandson, Cash Cota of Huntersville, N.C.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 11:00 am in the outdoor Colonnade at First Methodist Church, 217 South Church Street, Salisbury, N.C. 28144.
